Book Review: City of Fallen Angels by Cassandra Clare

8 Dec 2011

Title: City of Fallen Angels
Author: Cassandra Clare
Publisher: Walker Books
Release Date: April 5th, 2011
Format: Paperback
Source: Bought.

The Mortal War is over, and Clary Fray is back home in New York, excited about all the possibilities before her. She's training to become a Shadowhunter and to use her unique power. Her mother is getting married to the love of her life. Downworlders and Shadowhunters are at peace at last. And—most important of all—Clary can finally call Jace her boyfriend.

But nothing comes without a price.

Someone is murdering the Shadowhunters who used to be in Valentine’s Circle, provoking tensions between Downworlders and Shadowhunters that could lead to a second bloody war. Clary’s best friend, Simon, can’t help her. His mother just found out he’s a vampire and now he’s homeless. Everywhere he turns, someone wants him on their side—along with the power of the curse wrecking his life. And they’re willing to do anything to get what they want. At the same time he’s dating two beautiful, dangerous girls—neither of whom knows about the other.

When Jace begins to pull away from Clary without explaining why, she is forced to delve into the heart of a mystery whose solution reveals her worst nightmare: She herself has set in motion a terrible chain of events that could lead to her losing everything she loves. Even Jace.

Love. Blood. Betrayal. Revenge. The stakes are higher than ever in City of Fallen Angels.

~My reaction at the end of City of Glass: I WANT MORE! MORE JACE!
~Reaction at the end of City of Fallen Angels: THE SERIES SHOULD'VE ENDED WITH CITY OF GLASS!

It breaks my heart to criticise any book in the Mortal Instruments, because it's just such a fabulous series. (And yes, one of my favourite series ever!) Luckily, there'd been no reason to criticise the last three books, since in my opinion, they were PERFECT. Unfortunately, I can't say the same for Fallen Angels.

First of all, WHERE WAS THE PLOT?!? All I remember for 3/4 of the book was various characters talking, making out, talking some more and trying to deal with their respective, nonsensical relationship problems. (Something I should mention: I don't care about the unnecessary love triangle between Jordan/Maia/Simon. Oh wait! No...it's a love SQUARE, when Isabelle is added! Please just continue with the non-existent plot line.) I'll admit, if it wasn't for the fact that TMI is one of my favourite series, I would have given up half-way through. I was trudging through, all the while trying to convince myself that the plot will miraculously appear and develop in the next chapter so I should continue reading. *sigh*

Jace,Jace, JACE!*cries* WHAT HAPPENED TO YOU JACE?!?! I want that sarcastic, proud, I'm-better-than-you-and-you-know-it Jace! Why, oh why did you become all mopey? I hope you'll return to your usual self in City of Lost Souls, although given the ending of CoFA, I highly doubt it.

This felt more like a fan-fiction rather than an actual installment in the series. There was an excessive amount of kissing/making-out scenes that were unnecessary ( unless of course you're a die- hard Jace/Clary supporter/fan) and didn't contribute to the storyline at all.The last quarter of the book was definitely the best part and I'm looking forward to what will happen in Lost Souls!

  1. Thank you <3 I actually never particularly liked Simon in the other books, but I warmed up to him in this one! (okay maybe only because Jace became so...boring) But yes, Simon's definitely shot up on my list of fav. characters in TMI!!

  2. While I can't say I'm the fan of this series that 99.6% of the entire reading community are (I know, what is wrong with me?!) I am sorry to hear this didn't live up to expectations for you! It's so disappointing when you love a series so much and then the next book falls flat :( Well-written and honest review, Shirley! :)

  4. OOh I loved TMI series, and I d agree with you that there is not much of a solid plot in this book but this book had me realized that I do like Simon, and his character stood out in this book. He is the most fascinating character here I think, great review shirley,
