Review: Apollyon by Jennifer L. Armentrout

Apollyon
by Jennifer L. Armentrout
Publisher: Spencer Hill Press
Release Date: April 9th, 2013
Format: Paperback, 360 pages

Fate isn’t something to mess with… and now, neither is Alex.

Alex has always feared two things: losing herself in the Awakening and being placed on the Elixir. But love has always been stronger than Fate, and Aiden St. Delphi is willing to make war on the gods—and Alex herself—to bring her back.

The gods have killed thousands and could destroy entire cities in their quest to stop Seth from taking Alex’s power and becoming the all-powerful God Killer. But breaking Alex’s connection to Seth isn’t the only problem. There are a few pesky little loopholes in the whole “an Apollyon can’t be killed” theory, and the only person who might know how to stop the destruction has been dead for centuries.

Finding their way past the barriers that guard the Underworld, searching for one soul among countless millions, and then somehow returning will be hard enough. Alex might be able to keep Seth from becoming the God Killer… or she might become the God Killer herself.

Half-Blood was good. Pure was even better. Deity surpassed my expectations, and Apollyon quite literally blew my mind. It was incredible. Trust Jennifer to write the most exhilaratingly action-packed, unpredictable and steamy follow-up to her insanely addictive Covenant series. I for one, absolutely cannot wait for Sentinel to be released! Thank gods it’s released this year! I NEED TO KNOW THE ENDING.

Remember the feisty, hot-tempered, stubborn and awfully impulsive girl we met in Half-Blood? The girl who managed to kick ass, but could never keep her temper and tongue in check even in front of a court of pure bloods? The girl who jumped head-first into situations without thinking of the consequences, whose life motto seemed to be act first, think later? Well, the girl we met in Half-Blood and even through to Deity, has matured. I can’t even begin to describe how incredibly proud I am of Alex right now; while she’ll always be the snarky Alex we know, she now thinks before she acts. She reads the atmosphere and knows when a snarky remark can be made and when she should hold her tongue. She’s not purposely offending or angering those she doesn’t like; she’s making an effort to co-operate and be understanding of them. Alex has certainly come a long way J

No Covenant review can be written without mentioning our favourite YA fiction boyfriend, AIDEN.  *sigh* I think I’ve said this countless times already, but WHY DOESN’T AIDEN EXIST IN REAL LIFE?! I WANT MY VERY OWN AIDEN.  Aiden and Alex’s love story can probably become one of the most famous love stories in the history of…love stories. Let me use a few quotes to illustrate his love for Alex (because honestly, my wording cannot do justice for their love).

“You are his world. And you leave it, it will destroy him”.

“I’d give it all up for you”
“You are my everything”

“Not the kind of love that was fueled by need and that destroyed cities and entire civilisations, but the kind that rebuilt them, that much I knew”.
(And of course so many more…)

Yeah, I’m all sorts of tongue-tied and speechless right now. I’ll just go hide in my little corner and cry since I have yet to meet a guy as caring, protective, understanding and loving as Aiden. *wonders off*

Now, Seth seriously deserves to die a very painful death, along with Lucian and the god responsible for him. If I had the power of the gods/God Killer/ Apollyon, I’d blast him into the next universe without a second thought. HE SHOULD DIE. DIE, I SAY!!! He probably does have a conscience buried somewhere deep inside of him, but I still believe it’s futile for Alex to attempt to get him to see through his blind lust for power.

This book is about war. Sacrifices have to be made, compromises taken to ensure the survival of the world and the oblivious mortals. The characters are no longer teenagers living under the sheltered protection of the Covenant; they’re facing the real world. A world on the brink of destruction and the cruel extermination of mortals, half-bloods and pures. An extensive amount of new revelations are revealed in Apollyon, some slightly predictable, others well…unexpected, though not entirely surprising. Then there’s action. There’s lots and lots of fighting. Aiden, in particular, fights like never before and I guarantee you’ll be swooning J And speaking of swooning….Alex and Aiden share some intense and steamy scenes; ones you’ll be giggling over and re-reading just because you can’t get enough of Aiden shirtless!

Apollyon was definitely an impressive follow-up to Deity. Rest assured, there is no obvious cliff-hanger, though you’d still be begging for the next book. I’m anticipating some high quality action and a spectacular grand finale in Sentinel.

A massive thank you to Spencer Hill Press for providing a copy of Apollyon for review!

  4. Oh, yes, I have to agree that Alex has matured so much in this one. She is a different person altogether, and yet, there's enough of old Alex shining through to keep us all amused. And Aiden... *swoon* No, I won't even go there.
    beautiful review!

  5. Okay I totally covered my eyes with this review because I STILL HAVEN’T READ DIETY (how is this possible when I’m usually reading Jenn’s books months before release?!?!?!?) BUT I’m so happy that Deity was awesome and that Apollyon was even better. COLOUR ME RAINBOW EXCITED.

  6. I have this, I just need to read it, Shirley. I'm so glad to hear that Alex has matured. She definitely was a 100 times better in Deity than she was in the previous installments. I have to say she used to bug the crap out of me with her rash decisions! Shirtless Aiden?!! Oh my stars! Brilliant review. :)

  7. All I can wonder is why this series hasn't been picked up for a movie or tv series. It's fantastic and completely original. I simply can't wait for the next book!
